Molecheck 7s & Auckland Cup revamped
20 December 2024

Key changes for the upcoming tournaments

This season, the Molecheck 7s and Molecheck Auckland Cup are undergoing an exciting revamp to enhance their relevance and inclusivity. Bowls Auckland is committed to creating purposeful, engaging events that cater to players and clubs of all levels while ensuring a premier competitive experience.  Here’s a breakdown of what’s new.

MOLECHECK 7s: Elevated premier competition

This national pathway event has been redefined as a ‘premier’ event.

Team restrictions:
Each club can now enter only one Men’s and one Women’s side. This update:

  • aligns with Bowls New Zealand’s Conditions of Play.
  • positions us alongside other leading centres for this event.
  • promotes fairness by giving all clubs an equal chance to qualify for the national finals.
  • encourages a “best vs best” competitive atmosphere.

National representation:
Winners will represent Auckland at the National Interclub 7s.

MOLECHECK AUCKLAND CUP: Expanded opportunities for all

The Molecheck Auckland Cup welcomes an exciting new structure to ensure broader participation:

  • New format: Features Fours, Pairs, and 2-4-2 Pairs to maximise player involvement and eliminate the need for markers.
  • Unlimited entries: Clubs can enter as many sides as they wish.
  • Any Combination: Designed to support all clubs and promote mixed teams.
  • Flexibility: Players can rotate between disciplines and positions for a varied experience.
  • Increased prizes: First place now earns $1,200, with second place taking $600—over double last year’s rewards!

UNIFIED MATCHPOINT SYSTEM

Both events now adopt a consistent two-from-three-wins structure:

  • Game Points: two for a win, one for a draw.
  • Match Points: The side with the most game points earns two match points; ties split match points evenly.
