1-5 YEAR MEN’S SINGLES FINALS
14 MAY 2023 , REMUERA BOWLS
Steve Fisher, Royal Oak 22 – 19 Stephen Campbell, Pt Chevalier
And what a cracking Finals match, in what was ultimately an exciting neck-and-neck scoring game that could have gone either way.
Reigning title holder Stephen Campbell from Pt Chevalier was looking forward to a good Finals match against Royal Oak’s Steve Fisher. Campbell jokingly said, “This Final has been a long time coming, qualifying was last September.”
He also thought it was great to be able to play alongside the Champ of Champs Pairs Finals.
Both Steves are second-year bowlers and have bowling skills worthy of being 1-5 Year representatives for the past two seasons.
It was tight scoring through the early stages of the match and by the end of the 7th it was 6 a piece, by the end of the 10th Fisher having scored two consecutive 3s, was ahead 12-8. Fisher kept his nose in front, at the end of the 16th he was up 16-11. Campbell came back scoring three 2s in a row and is now in front 17-16. The battle further intensifies, and it’s point for point, 17-17, 18-18, 19-19.
With the score tied again at 19-19, Fisher is one shot down on the head, with his last bowl moved the shot bowl to take victory and become the new titleholder, 22-19. Wow, what a match,
Congratulations Steve Fisher and what a commendable effort from Stephen Campbell – you both had us on tenterhooks right to the last bowl.
In the trophy presentation, Steve paid tribute to his biggest supporters, his family. A very proud Robyn Fisher said “The highlight of the game was Steve winning and playing the last bowl to win. It was very good to watch.”
Thank you Peter Bennett from Remuera Bowls for being the host and headquarters and thanks to Umpire, Phil Bowden and Tournament Convenor, Les Smith.
