Bowls Auckland was delighted to recently launch its school engagement programme to a few local high schools. Over the past week, Rangatahi Roll Up sessions were run at Waitakere College, Liston College and St Dominics College, where students had the opportunity to experience the joys of bowls for the very first time. This endeavour marked an exciting step in promoting the sport among youth across Tāmaki Makaurau.
The Roll Up sessions were run during lunchtime to make it convenient for students to join in without disrupting their regular school schedule. Each session lasted 30-40 minutes, giving ample time for students to get a taste of the sport and discover its various aspects. Throughout the week, 20-30 students showed up for each session to give Roll Up a try. The relaxed and inclusive atmosphere encouraged an environment where students could enjoy themselves while learning about bowls.
These sessions were made possible thanks to a collaboration with Sport Waitakere, a regional sports trust that promotes active and healthy lifestyles in West Auckland communities. Through this partnership, Bowls Auckland was able to connect with students eager to explore a new sporting opportunity and ultimately bring the sport to an entirely new audience.
We wish to say a big thank you to Simon Poppleton from New Lynn Bowling Club, who helped deliver these sessions.
The most exciting part about this programme is it is just the beginning! Bowls Auckland’s official school engagement programme, scheduled to kick off next year, will give more opportunities for high school students to get involved and to be a part of this fantastic sport.
