Taylor Bowls 8s & 6s wrap up
12 November 2024

The Taylor Bowls Interclub 8s and Half Day 6s have come to an exhilarating close, with thrilling matches across all divisions determining the final standings. Here’s a rundown of how the action unfolded and which teams came out on top.

Any Combination
A navigational mix-up saw Henderson mistakenly visit Papakura instead of Papatoetoe, after also visiting Glendowie prior! Auckland capitalised, winning their top-of-the-table clash. Henderson rebounded in round two, defeating Epsom 6-0 but couldn’t catch Auckland, who claimed the title, leaving Henderson in second. Epsom Eagles, last week’s third-place team, lost all six matches, allowing Mt Albert Blue to snatch third.

Half Day 6s
This division delivered its usual unpredictability!

In the Blue section, Pringle Park Storm emerged unbeaten champions, while Kohi Keas edged out Kohi Korus for second place, both with four wins, but Keas claimed it with a +48 score differential.
In the White section, Pakuranga’s undefeated run was halted by St Heliers, who secured a decisive 31-15 win to take the top spot. A narrow round six victory over Epsom Falcons ensured St Heliers stayed ahead, finishing +18 shots clear of Pakuranga, with both teams on five wins.

Women’s Event
In the Premier section, Royal Oak Athena proved dominant, securing the title with a strong performance in the final round. St Heliers Navy put up a valiant effort but couldn’t close the gap, while Blockhouse Bay finished in third.
Division One saw Onehunga & Districts claim the top spot after a decisive match against Glen Eden Firebirds 6-0, with Carlton Cornwall Black finishing second overall, and Howick third pipping Otahuhu by score differential.

Men’s Event
Men’s Division Three
Pt Chevalier fulfilled expectations as favourites, taking the top spot, however, it was one of the more closely contested men’s divisions, strong finals day performances from both Railway Storm and Railway Trax saw them jump Pakuranga and Howick to take second and third respectively.

Men’s Division Two
Mt Eden were unable to hold their lead to secure the title, Te Atatu Roosters taking the win 4-2 in a closely contested fours game while the pairs blew out one each way. Howick Great Whites took full advantage of their final round draw securing the top spot, while the Roosters clinched second place by just one rink point over Mt Eden.

Men’s Division One
Blockhouse Bay Blue extended their six-point lead to eight claiming the title, East Tamaki Aces finished second narrowly edging out Papatoetoe by just nine shots, both sides equal on 20 rink points.

Premier Division
Defending champions Auckland fought back to claim third after a bad first day, last year’s runners-up Pringle Park Lightning however were unable to recover finishing in the relegation zone just one rink point short of Royal Oak and Onehunga Districts.

Mt Albert Lions led the charge all the way through, while only game points were counted, they won/drew most games only losing 4-2 to Carlton Cornwall in the final round, however, the title was secured by that stage. That win did see Carlton Cornwall jump one rink point clear of Auckland, taking second place.

Closing thoughts
Auckland’s top bowlers displayed grit, determination, and sportsmanship across all divisions. Congratulations to the winners and teams for their efforts, and thanks to everyone who contributed to the event’s success!
