This weekend flips the script with the women stepping into the Centre Singles spotlight and the men assembling in trios for the Centre Triples competition across Auckland.
With top-tier talent across both events and plenty of hard-to-pick matchups, the stage is set for an electric couple of days on the greens.
Mt Eden’s Full House – A ‘Pair’ of Greens, Filled with ‘Triples’
Mt Eden Bowling Club is once again the heart of the action, running both of its natural greens at full capacity after a demanding week of preparation by greenkeeper Mike Galloway.
“It’s been a pretty relentless week fighting off the weather,” said Galloway. “Hopefully the preparation has paid off, and bowlers will get pretty good conditions for this weekend.”
Hospitality is always top-notch at Mt Eden, and with a full house expected across both days, the vibe will be just as fierce as the competition.
There’s plenty of firepower lining up in the Men’s Triples:
- Alex Reed (Pt Chevalier) skips Colin Williams and Stephen Campbell, who have already made the semi-finals in both Pairs and Fours this season.
- National Fours champions Mike Galloway (Royal Oak), Martin Dixon, and Steve Fisher reunite for what’s sure to be a strong showing.
- Trios led by Neville Hill (Auckland BC) and Tony Grantham (Mt Albert) will also be among the key contenders.
- At East Tāmaki, the young guns Liam Hill, David Motu, and Ryan Hill (Auckland BC) are ones to watch—but they’ll have to battle hard in a stacked section.
Big Names, Big Matches for Women’s Singles
Like the Men’s Singles a fortnight ago, the Women’s draw has delivered some sizzling matchups from the outset. Fourteen section winners will progress to post-section play at Royal Oak on Sunday.
Here are a few early-round battles to circle:
- Section 2: Promises to be a blockbuster clash between recent U26 Pairs champ Henrietta Scott and Auckland Development Rep Gloria Teinaki.
- Section 3: Fellow U26 winner, Hannah Dawson, finds herself in a tough section featuring Rebecca Brosnan and Donna Davison—both strong singles players with 1–5 rep experience.
- Section 5: Possibly the most stacked group of all, featuring Angela Longney (St Heliers), Ashleigh Jeffcoat (Carlton Cornwall), and Kimberley Hemingway (Auckland BC)—three elite singles specialists with plenty of representative pedigree.
Whether you’re playing or just there for the vibes, this weekend is shaping up to be a cracker. Catch the action live, enjoy the hospitality, and support some of the best bowlers Auckland has to offer.
