A warm welcome to the 2024-2025 season. I am proud and privileged to serve as the new President of Bowls Auckland.
Reflecting on when I began my bowling journey 14 years ago, I fondly remember my uncle, who even at the tender age of 99, was still bowling regularly. He invited me to join him in playing mixed pairs. On another rink, I noticed a 15-year-old future Blackjack delivering her bowl with remarkable skill. I watch in awe – this is a sport that transcends age, skill level, and background. Bowls truly is for everyone, offering a unique space where people from all walks of life come together. Whether you’re competing at the highest level or simply enjoying the camaraderie of your local club, bowls is a sport that unites us all.
My journey in bowls began as a Club Secretary, and I’ve been fortunate to play at all representative levels within the Auckland Centre. The words that stand out to me most are friendship and camaraderie. I encourage all bowlers, whether on or off the green, to engage with your club—bring a smile, volunteer your time, be a good sport, and maintain a positive attitude. These qualities will not only enrich your own experience but also foster lasting friendships within our community.
As President, it is heartening to see our clubs flourishing, supported by the Bowls Auckland Board, our CEO, and his team, along with our dedicated committees. Together, we are guiding our clubs into a new era, balancing exciting innovations with the traditional values that have long defined our sport. This healthy balance ensures that we honour the past while embracing the future.
The Bowls Auckland Board is a cohesive group with diverse skills, contributing to the strong governance of our game. I look forward to working with this year’s Board, along with our CEO Dean and his team, whose commitment to respect and inclusion is central to our strategy. These values enhance our connection with clubs and, in turn, with their members.
This season, I eagerly look forward to meeting the unsung volunteers in our clubs and expressing my gratitude to those serving on Executive Committees, whose contributions are vital to their club’s success. To all bowlers—bring along a friend, a neighbour, or a work colleague to your club. Their enjoyment will be your reward.
Auckland is a diverse city, and our bowling clubs reflect that diversity. Let’s embrace it both on and off the green. We are fortunate to have a sport that offers so many opportunities.
Our game of bowls is unique in what it offers. Come along for the ride and enjoy the journey with me!
