Coach Development November Highlights
On Wednesday, 7 November, local coaches came together for a dynamic session focused on Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) – a fresh coaching method designed to transform how players learn and play. TGFU moves beyond traditional drills, immersing players in modified games that replicate real-match scenarios to improve skills, strategy, and decision-making.
During the session, coaches explored the key advantages of TGFU. Unlike standard drills that hone individual skills in isolation, TGFU weaves these skills into game-like situations, enhancing players’ ability to make in-the-moment decisions and work effectively as a team. By experiencing a game flow and adjusting actions to match conditions, players develop a deeper understanding of tactics and strategy, creating a more holistic skill set and fostering genuine enjoyment of the sport.
Coaches exchanged insights on incorporating TGFU into their training routines and shared successful examples of game-based exercises that can help players sharpen both skills and strategic thinking. To cap off the evening, they stepped onto the green to test out TGFU methods firsthand.
As Bowls Auckland continues to support coach growth, sessions like this help ensure our coaches remain well-equipped with innovative, player-centred strategies.
Next month’s session will feature a social potluck dinner with engaging communication skill games to foster team building.
