On Friday, 13 September, Bowls Auckland hosted a ‘Have A Go Day’ event at New Lynn Bowling Club, offering people with disabilities the opportunity to try lawn bowls. Two vibrant sessions ran throughout the day, bringing fun and excitement to all who participated.
The first session welcomed 20 students from the special learning units at Selwyn College and Waitākere College. These students, many of whom had never tried lawn bowls before, embraced the experience wholeheartedly, and the smiles on their faces said it all. The event introduced them to the sport in a supportive and fun-filled environment.
In the second session, participants with visual impairments took to the greens, including a group from BLENNZ (Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ). Like the students, most had never bowled before but soon found their groove and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Adding to the special atmosphere we were delighted Sue Curran and Gerald Brouwers were present, both of whom represented New Zealand at the 2022 Commonwealth Games,
World champion Tayla Bruce led the day, expertly guiding participants through modified games suited to their individual abilities. Her leadership and enthusiasm made the experience memorable for everyone involved.
A big thank you goes out to the many volunteers who generously gave their time to assist on the day. Without their dedication and support, events like these wouldn’t be possible. Their contribution ensured that every participant felt included and welcomed.
The primary goal of ‘Have A Go Day’ was to introduce lawn bowls to groups who might not have had the opportunity to play before. The focus was on fun and inclusion, creating a space where everyone could give the sport a try without any pressure. It was a day full of laughter, learning, and connection, truly showcasing the inclusive spirit of the bowling community.
