Molecheck Women’s Open Singles preview
20 September 2024

Ninety-six women from around the motu will descend on Auckland this weekend (21 and 22 September) to see who will be crowned the 2024/25 Molecheck Women’s Open Singles Champion.

The field is the most ever in the event’s history, beating the previous high of 88. Not only are the entries at an all-time high, but so is the quality of the field! With current Blackjacks and NZ development players headlining the field including Ashleigh Jeffcoat, Bronwyn Stevens, Caitlin Thomson, Deb White and Leeane Poulson.

Last year’s Champion Adele Ineson of Takapuna is back to defend her crown but faces a tough challenge in the final round of section play Saturday where she meets current New Zealand Champion of Champion singles winner Sue Hodges of the Omokoroa Club. There are several very difficult sections with some headline matches throughout the day.

The event is spread across six venues, and we thank all host clubs, markers, umpires, volunteers and greenkeepers for their awesome mahi as we welcome players from Omaha, One Tree Point, Wanaka, Omakau, Mangawhai, Hawera Park, Alexandra, Hinuera and everywhere in between! Making the event truly an ‘open’.

The spike in entries is pleasing following an effort to enhance the event this season including increased prize money (over $3,000) and off-green activities such as the High Tea. The latter will be hosted on Sunday just before the Final and include keynote speaker Alicia Hoskin who is coming in hot off two gold medals at the recent Olympics, and attendees will be treated to an up-close view of the hardware!

The above would not have been possible without the support from our event partners Molecheck. A massive thanks to the team, and don’t forget all Bowls Auckland affiliated club members receive a 23% discount on all full mole checks.

We encourage everyone to get down and support the players this weekend, and if you can’t make it to the venues follow us online at our Facebook page or visit the events page on our website.
