Hot off the press! November’s Interclub event, a significant part of our bowls calendar, is taking a new direction. We’ve listened to your feedback and made some exciting changes to enhance the experience for everyone involved. Our goal is to create an event that not only honours the traditions of bowls but also provides a dynamic and inclusive environment where players of all levels can thrive.
Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or new to the sport, this year’s Interclub event is designed with the player in mind. By reintroducing the popular ‘8s’ format and aligning our strategy to support both participation and competition, we’re confident that this event will elevate the standard of play while fostering growth, development, and a deeper connection within our bowls community.
Key highlights:
- Purposeful competition: We’ve introduced a clear purpose for the non-pathway Interclub competition, focusing on player development and enjoyment.
- Return of the ‘8s’ format: Due to popular demand, the well-received ‘8s’ format is back. This structure provides an excellent opportunity for new and developing players to compete alongside and against some of Auckland’s top bowlers.
- Strategic alignment: Our approach ensures that all players, from emerging talent to seasoned competitors, can contribute to raising the overall standard of play. This format also serves as a valuable pathway for future competitive selections.
Event format overview:
- Fours: 18 ends.
- Pairs: 21 ends.
- Two rounds per day: Generous 3½-hour time limit (9:30 am & 1:30 pm start times).
- Competition structure: Sides of eight will compete in one Fours game and two Pairs games. Win two out of three rink points to secure the match victory.
- Dynamic play: In the afternoon, players will switch disciplines and face new opponents.
- Categories: Competition categories are Men’s, Women’s, and Any Combination.
- Half-Day 6s: Will continue as delivered last year.
To foster inclusion and provide equal playing opportunities, we’re trialling the removal of tiered sections in favour of randomly drawn sections. This shift allows clubs to confidently select graded sides, without the pressure of competitive tiers. We encourage clubs to support this change by pairing stronger players with those still developing, lifting the overall standard of play and promoting long-term growth and club pride.
The event opens today, with club entries closing on 29 September. Most clubs are expected to close their sign-ups a few days prior. This year, it’s important to note that all players must be named in BowlsHub at the time of entry, meaning every participant will need a BowlsHub ID. Sign up for BowlsHub here.
